SACRED ICON RETREAT

As our fall artist-in-residence, Mary Jane will host a Sacred Icon Retreat the week of November 11 to 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in room 113. The workshop is $495 and includes instruction, supplies, and daily lunch.

“Icon retreats offer a truly profound spiritual discipline that delves into the depths of our souls. It is the pursuit of spirituality and the recognition of our work as a sacred act of prayer.

Those who create sacred art are caught between individual expressions of our deepest insights and the audience for whom we are creating the work. Visual translations of mystical thoughts and doctrines are both changing this ancient art form of icon painting. As we design new icons, it is good to remember the roots of the practice.”
— Mary Jane Miller

“Come and share, explore, and learn more about iconography painting as a prayerful, spiritual practice. Visit and share. No experience is necessary.

Even if you do not have a particular bent towards religious imagery, you cannot deny the quality of the pigments and their fascinating character.

Icon imagery is structured by lines, color values, shapes, textures, space, and movement. There is a world beyond straight lines and curves, yellow for the sun, green for the grass, red for roses, etc. The earth’s abundance and diversity can be found in tiny colored particles which make up egg tempura paint. We use it to create divine image.”
